What is Qigong?

Qigong is a holistic system of coordinated body posture and movement, breathing, and meditation used for the purposes of health, spirituality, and martial arts training. With roots in Chinese medicine, Qigong is traditionally viewed as a practice to cultivate and balance Qi, translated as "life energy". Contemporary Chinese Medical Qigong defines it is "the skill of body-mind exercise that integrates body, breath, and mind adjustments into one" and emphasizes that Qigong is based on "adjustment" (tiao 調, also translated as “regulation”, “tuning”, or “alignment.”) of body, breath, and mind.

As such, Qigong is viewed by practitioners as being more than common physical exercise, because Qigong combines postural, breathing, and mental training in one to produce a particular psychophysiological state of being. In China, where it is considered a "standard medical technique", Qigong is commonly prescribed to treat a wide variety of conditions, and clinical applications such us hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, menopause syndrome, insomnia, tumors and cancer, lower back and leg pain etc. It is also considered safe for use across diverse populations.

What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of alternative medicine called energy healing which is originated from Japan. Reiki is a simple yet powerful healing technique using energy channeled through the hands of the practitioner. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese words, rei (霊) and ki (気) . The word rei(霊) means universal or divine wisdom. Ki (気) means the same as Qi (Chi) in Chinese and prana in Sanskrit, and refers to the vitality or life-force that animals all living things. Qi (Chi) is the energy used by all healers and also by martial artists (Tai Qi, Qigong). It is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind and consciousness. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion, nor does it contradict any religion. Reiki complements other healing methods and spiritual practices.

Dr. Mikao Usui, who was a Japanese monk, is the founder of Reiki healing technique. After meditating and fasting for 21 days in Mt.Kurama in Kyoto in 1922, He found the nondepletable Reiki energy which can heal others. He soon started treatment for sick people and also teaching for treatment. It is said that many injured received his and his students' treatment when the great Kanto earthquake occurred in 1923. Reiki is transferred to Dr. Usui's students, and also to Ms.Hawayo Takata, who was a Japanese-American living in Hawaii. Though her, Reiki has spread though USA and Europe. Nowadays, Reiki has been known internationally and It was re-imported into Japan in 1980's.

Reiki is now also considered as an effective alternative medicine. For example, In United Kingdom, Reiki treatment by medical profession is covered by insurance in hospitals.
